The Prairieland Anti-Cruelty Program Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Program offers low-cost spaying and neutering for the pets of Champaign county residents who meet income eligibility requirements.

A The Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Program provides sterilizations (fixing) for cats and dogs for individuals who qualify.

A You qualify if you are a Champaign County County resident and meet any one of the following:

Each family member above the eighth, add $3,020 (100%) or $3,850 (125%).

Q How do I apply?

A You must complete a Low-Cost Spay and Neuter Application and Agreement. To receive a copy of the Application and Agreement, call 217-352-9026. Mail the completed application along with proof of eligibility (such as a Social Security pay stub, food stamp card or AFDC stub) to: Prairieland Anti-Cruelty Program, 1303 Maple Park, Champaign, IL 61820.

We will notify you by phone about the status of your application within five working days after we receive your completed Application and Agreement. If approved, we will schedule an appointment for the operation. Also, your pet must be in good general health. We will not perform the sterilization operation if your pet is sick. The program is limited to three animals per family.

QHow do I prepare my pet for the sterilization operation?

A Do not feed your pet after 10 p.m. the night before the scheduled surgery (which also includes the morning of the surgery). Allow your pet to have a bowel movement before you bring your pet to the clinic. Arrive with your pet at the designated clinic between 9 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. on the scheduled day of surgery.

Your pet will be ready for pick up that same afternoon. If you do not pick up your pet before the close of business the day of surgery, you will be charged a boarding fee for each day your pet remains at the facility. Any pet left 72 hours (3 days) past release time will be considered to be abandoned and will be turned over to the champaign County Humane Society where it will be evaluated for potential adoption. If it does not pass the adoption evaluation, it may be euthanized.

Animal welfare should not compete unfairly with veterinarians. We don't need to provide discounts for the general public who will normally obtain the services anyway, we need to take our precious resource and direct them at the greater need, low-income charitable services.
